So, this Saturday we’re playing for the delightful Holic peeps for their 4th Birthday Party at Cafe’ 1001 in Brick Lane. It’s going to be a bit of a monster celebration starting at midnight and carrying on till 10am. We’re on at one of the more “responsible” slot times (2am-4am) at the front area so expect our usual cosmic-disco not disco-house-techno-ish type of affair from us. If you’re in London, we still have some concession list names so hit us back HERE A.S.A.P. If not in London we will also be streaming our set (may the God of Bandwidth be with us ) on HERE for your aural pleasure only.
The world doesn’t need anyone to share FACT podcast usually but this mix from Urban Tribe a.k.a. DJ Stingray a.k.a. Sherard Ingram is such a beast I just have to. Taking cues from golden era of British electro (Decal, Matt Carter etc…) circa 2000-2004 to Detroit minimalism of Robert Hood alike, the mix is fast, relentless and does not ever let up. None of those ear-bleeding stuff Ed Banger and Kitsuné put out is electro, this is. Listen up very loud.

Some of you may have heard already but Salvatore Cusato aka Casco has sadly passed away last month. He’s produced some of the best Italo disco tracks in my opinion and I feel very lucky to have caught him deejay once 4 years ago and his set was like “the best of Italo megamix” done live with using just vinyl. Quick cut ups of all our favourite Italo classics made everyone in that tiny sweaty basement go absolutely nuts. Prior to that night, I don’t recall many Italo originators playing in London so I think everyone was so excited after seeing the legend live and a great night seamlessly continued at mine till very silly hours of Sunday afternoon as usual… Here are some of the most well known works of his and my favourites, too.
Thank you for the great music, Casco and rest in peace…
To get you in the mood for tonight’s “Zero Set” at Big Chill Bar in Brick Lane, here Danish afro re-edit du jour, Joystick Jay, splices up classic Fela for the massive disco party explosion. Check out his Soundcloud for more loveliness.
Anyhow, it’s free entry all night and I’ll be playing from 7pm- midnight. See you then!
Codcast number three from Heaven 17’s nephews, Hiem aka Nick “Nico” Eastwood and David “Bozz” Boswell! I’ll let them rant this time ‘cos they’re big lads from up North.
…Rising from the ashes like a mechanical wasp, those two Sheffield musical adventurers have been once again tinkering their bleeps ,synths and buggering their old machines back to life, Bozzwell has been soloing and making records over in Germany with Firm records from Cologne, and to the boot scoring a superb debut long player from the label last year to a global critical acclaim.
Hiem have never been ones to play ball , whether its a strange tale of northern life, over a barrage of bleeping synths and breakneck drums or a disco groove
with Bozzwell’s falsetto Prince-ing over the top, ever the unpredictable seems to be their motto and stance, with a full length “Escape from Division Street “ on the way in April 2011, on which they collaborate with Roots Manuva and Phil Oakey. The first single from the forthcoming album is a Sparks influenced number called “Freaky Nights” which will also drop as a single with remixes from Darabi, Tim Paris and Kompakt’s Shumi!
My January 2011 was rather repugnant. It was quite perishing. But now it’s OK because I’m starting irregular residencies at Big Chill Bar (Brick Lane) and Big Chill House (King’s Cross)! The night, “Zero Set”, which is named after Dieter Moebius, Conny Plank, and Mani Neumeier‘s seminal synth odyssey from 1983, where I will be playing yacht rock, bongo kosmische, no wave, (whatever) disco, windy city house, future bass garage step (or whatever they are called this week) and Kompakt Schaffelfieber, in that order. The point of this new night is specifically to play (dare I say it…)experimental records I enthusiastically buy often but usually not being able to play out at parties as much as more generic sounding dance 12 inches. They might not meet the roars of deranged people from Essex at their weekend shenanigans but I am hoping that some of them would be fooled into thinking “dancing to lush Nu-Balearica like this is quite camp but a great fun on a school night. Waah!”. Because it’s on weekly night, BPM range will be much wider, too. From dub to gabber kinda thing.
The first one will be on Wednesday 9th February and I’ll be playing all night from 7pm- 12am. Free entry.
